Barzan Towers

Summary
This imposing 16-metre high watchtower was a lookout for approaching ships.
Description

Built in traditional Qatari design from coral rock and limestone between 1910- 16, this imposing 16-metre high watchtower was a lookout for approaching ships, particularly those of incoming Ottoman troops in the early 1900s.  It is believed to have also been used to protect water supplies and as an observatory to track the moon and determine the dates of the lunar calendar. Unlike other forts in Qatar, Barzan Towers was built over several floors, giving it the name Barzan, which means High Place in Arabic.

Al Zubarah

Summary
This 20th century fort is the youngest and most prominent feature at the Al Zubarah Archaeological Site
Description

This 20th century fort is the youngest and most prominent feature at the Al Zubarah Archaeological Site, a UNESCO World Heritage site.  A pristine example of a typical Arab fort, its one-meter-thick walls could ward off invaders and also helped keep the rooms cool during the hot summer months.  Located adjacent to the walled coastal town of Al Zubarah, about 105 km northwest of Doha, the fort overlooks the ruins of a once bustling pearling and trading town which bore witness to fierce tribal battles in the 18th century as powerful empires fought for regional dominance.

The heavily fortified town of Al Zubarah fell to forces loyal to the Sultan of Muscat in 1811. In the 19th century it expanded into a bustling settlement that would go on to form the beginnings of the modern-day Gulf states.  Today, the fort has been transformed into a museum where visitors can explore artefacts from the pearl diving era.

Al Koot Fort

Summary
Al Koot Fort
Description

Please note that the fort is due to reopen to visitors in 2021, and can presently be viewed from outside.  Right in the heart of Doha, near the bustling Souq Waqif, is the well-preserved Al Koot Fort – an imposing, white-stone square fort that was originally built in 1880 and then rebuilt in 1927 by Sheikh Abdulla bin Qassim Al Thani after the original fort was abandoned by the Ottomans. Each corner of the fort has a watch tower – three circular and one rectangular. Since it was built, the fort has served as a jail, a police station and was used as a museum where artefacts and artworks including authentic Qatari handicrafts, ornaments, original fishing equipment and boats, historic photos, and oil paintings were housed.

Al Wajba Fort

Summary
15km west of Doha stand the remains of Al Wajba Fort, one of the oldest forts in the region.
Description

15km west of Doha stand the remains of Al Wajba Fort, one of the oldest forts in the region.  Originally built in the late 1700s, it was where the Battle of Al Wajbah played out in March 1893. At the time, Qatar was a province of the Ottoman Empire, and the battle occurred after Ottoman officials imprisoned 16 Qatari tribal leaders. The Ottomans were defeated by the army of Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani, who had refused to bend to Ottoman rule. A key part of the Sheikh’s winning strategy was to cut off the area's water supply.

During its lifetime, Al Wajba Fort has also been home to a number of sheikhs, including Hamad bin Abdullah Al Thani. It represents a truly authentic piece of Arabian social and political history.

Dahl Al Misfir Cave

Summary
Dahl Al Misfir Cave
Description

One of Qatar’s most exciting natural sites, the 40m deep cave at Dahl Al Misfir is formed largely of fibrous gypsum that sometimes gives off a faint, otherworldly glow. This phosphorescence is the result of gypsum deposits found in the centre of the peninsula which give rise to the geological phenomena known as desert roses (clusters of roughly rose-shaped gypsum crystals).

Museum of Islamic Art

The internationally renowned Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) is the crown jewel of Qatar’s museums.

Summary
The internationally renowned Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) is the crown jewel of Qatar’s museums.
Description

The internationally renowned Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) is the crown jewel of Qatar’s museums, showcasing 14 centuries of Islamic art and artefacts from around the world.

An Architectural Wonder

Conceived by Pritzker Prize winning architect I.M. Pei, most known for designing the glass pyramid in the forecourt of the Louvre in Paris, the museum sits on a purpose-built island abutting Doha’s central waterfront promenade and is surrounded by MIA Park’s extensive green spaces.

The building was inspired by the Sabil, or ablution fountain, in the 9th century Mosque of Ahmad Ibn Tulun in Cairo, Egypt.  Traditional Islamic patterns (domes, geometric patterns, arches, water features) meld with modern architecture to produce this hallmark museum in Qatar.

East-West/West-East

Summary
Comprising of four steel plates this art installation spans over 1km.
Description

Nestled between limestone rock formations outside Zekreet, just north of Doha, lies Richard Serra’s East-West/West-East installation.  Comprising of four steel plates, each of which is over 14m in height, the installation spans over 1km.  It stands in stark contrast to the soft brown hues of the desert surrounding it, and offers a comment on isolation and the passage of time.

Description

Right in the heart of Doha, near the bustling Souq Waqif, is the well-preserved Al Koot Fort – an imposing, white-stone square fort that was originally built in 1880 and then rebuilt in 1927 by Sheikh Abdulla bin Qassim Al Thani after the original fort was abandoned by the Ottomans. Al Rakayat Fort

Summary
Rakayat Fort in the north western corner of Qatar was built to protect local supplies of freshwater.
Description

One of several desert forts from the 19th century, and one of a few renovated during the 1980s, Rakayat Fort in the north western corner of Qatar was built to protect local supplies of freshwater. Remnants of a village can be found nearby.

Named after the Arabic word for ‘well’, Rakayat Fort contains a 5km-deep freshwater well, from which villagers painstakingly pulled up water.  The fort is unusual for its low height (only three metres). Each corner of the central courtyard features a staircase leading up to one of three rectangular and one cylindrical watchtower, with expansive views of the rocky landscape juxtaposed against the sparkling waters of the Arabian Gulf.
